What to Expect at Your First Aesthetics Consultation in Grafton, WI
Thinking about microneedling, filler, or anti-wrinkle injections, but not sure where to start?
Start with an aesthetics consultation.
It's a conversation, and nothing happens to your skin unless you decide it should. At Oasis Healthcare in Grafton, every consult is led by a nurse practitioner who reviews your health history first and talks treatments second.
Here's how a first visit works, what to ask, and how three common treatments differ.
Why an Aesthetics Consultation Comes First
Aesthetic treatments are medical procedures. Some use fine needles. Others involve an injection. They all work best when the person planning them knows your health, your skin, and your goals.
A consult gives you that planning time before you commit to anything. You learn what each option can address, what it can't, and what recovery looks like. You also get a feel for the provider. That matters, since you'll want to trust the person holding the needle.
At Oasis, aesthetics sits inside a clinician-owned medical practice. The same clinic handles sick visits, primary care, and aesthetic treatments at Oasis MedSpa. Our providers carry that medical background into every aesthetics appointment.
What Happens at Your First Aesthetics Consult
Most first consults follow the same five steps.
1. You share your health history
Expect questions about your medications, supplements, allergies, and past procedures. Your provider will also ask about your skin: breakouts, sensitivity, cold sores, eczema, or rosacea. Tell us if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy. Some treatments wait until later.
If you've had aesthetic treatments before, share what was done, which area, and when. Bring a list of everything you take, including skincare products. It saves time and catches details people forget.
2. You talk about your goals
This is the part to take your time with. What bothers you when you look in the mirror? Is it the lines between your brows, or the texture of your skin? Is there anything you want to keep exactly as it is?
Specific answers help. "My forehead lines show in photos" gives your provider more to work with than "I want to look younger."
3. Your provider looks at your face and skin
Your provider will look at your skin at rest and while you make expressions. Frowning, raising your brows, and smiling show which lines come from muscle movement. Lines that show up at rest point to a different kind of treatment.
4. You go over your options
Your provider explains which treatments fit your goals and why. They'll cover the number of sessions, the timing between them, aftercare, and cost. If a treatment isn't a good fit for you right now, they'll tell you that too.
5. You decide on the next step
You might book a treatment, think it over, or start with one option and add another later. Ask whether treatment can happen the same day or at a follow-up visit. There's no pressure to decide on the spot. A good consult leaves you with a clear plan, whatever you choose.
Microneedling, Anti-Wrinkle Injections, and Filler: How They Differ
These three treatments get mentioned together a lot. Each one does a different job.
- Microneedling works on the surface and texture of your skin. A device with very fine needles makes tiny, controlled channels in the skin. That prompts the skin's natural repair process. According to Cleveland Clinic, microneedling is used for concerns like enlarged pores, fine lines, scars, and loose skin. Many patients plan it as a series of sessions.
- Anti-wrinkle injections work on the muscles that create expression lines. A provider injects a small amount of prescription medicine into specific facial muscles. The muscle relaxes, and the skin above it gradually looks smoother. Common areas include frown lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet. Your provider decides how much to use and where. The effect is temporary, so patients who like it come back for repeat visits.
- Dermal filler adds volume under the skin. A provider injects a soft gel into specific areas of the face, such as the cheeks, the lips, or the lines around the mouth. Anti-wrinkle injections relax muscles. Filler works differently: it restores fullness in areas that have thinned over time. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates dermal fillers as medical devices and lists their common side effects, including bruising, redness, and swelling. How long filler lasts depends on the material used and the area treated. Tell your provider about any allergies, including allergies to numbing medicine, since some fillers contain it.
The appointments feel different too. Microneedling often starts with a numbing cream, and your skin may look red or feel tight or dry afterward. Anti-wrinkle injections take a few small injections, and the effect appears gradually over several days. Filler can cause some swelling or bruising at first, and your provider will tell you when to judge the final look. Your provider will walk you through aftercare for each one before you leave.
Some patients combine treatments. Injections soften movement lines, filler restores volume, and microneedling works on overall texture.
Your provider can tell you whether combining them makes sense for you, and in what order.
Questions to Ask at Your Aesthetics Consult
Bring these to your appointment. Write the answers down.
- Which treatment fits the concern I care about most?
- How many sessions will I likely need, and how far apart?
- What will my skin look and feel like right after treatment?
- What should I avoid before and after my appointment?
- Are any of my medications or health conditions a problem?
- What side effects should I watch for, and who do I call?
- What does the full plan cost, including follow-up visits?
- Who will perform my treatment?
Plan Around Your Calendar
Holiday photos, a wedding, or a trip coming up? Tell your provider at the consult. Microneedling can leave your skin pink, tight, or dry for several days. Filler can cause swelling or bruising at first. Wrinkle-relaxing injections smooth lines gradually, so allow several days for them to settle. Good timing means your treatment fits your schedule.
